HKC 2004 Kendo Seminar

In November 2004, the HKC once again held its annual Kendo event. This was a bit different than past years, as we decided to make the main focus of the event a "Kendo Teaching Seminar" vs a tournament. A tournament was still held, but this was to be used as a starting point for what the topics of the seminar were to be.

This year we had two visitors. Sensei Matthew Raymond was our head judge and seminar instructor and Christina Grava of the UofT Kendo Club.

The tournament was held in a "Round Robin" Style, so everyone had a number of matches. Points were scored to the participants depending on the outcome of the match, and the four highest point scorers faced off for placements in an elimination style tournament.

Tournament Participants:
  • Steve
  • Chris
  • Christina
  • TJ
  • Rob
  • Paul
  • Kim
  • Jason
Shinpan:
Sensei Matthew Raymond

Each person played well in the tournament. Even though in the end there could only be four "winners", everyone had a great time. Each of the winners were awarded a Shinai, compliments of www.AMPlusKendo.com.

Tournament Results:

  • 1st Place: Steve
  • 2nd Place: Chris
  • 3rd Place: Paul
  • 3rd Place: TJ

  • The awards didn't stop there, however. The HKC always awards a Fighting Spirit and a Kigurai awards to the Kendoka who displays the best spirit and who attempts to show the most "textbook" style Kendo respectively. The recipients of these awards were selected by Sensei Matthew Raymond.

    Secondary Awards:

    • Fighting Spirit: Rob
    • Kigurai Award: Jason

Lastly Steve, Chris, and Christina, the three most senior Kendoka other than Raymond Sensei at the seminar, each selected one Kendoka who participated in the seminar. The selection process was left up to each person, but the requirement was that the person you selected had to stand out in your mind above all the rest in a positive way. Each of the selected Kendoka were awarded a shinai.

Chris's selection: Sean, for spirit and excellent Kendo.

Christina's selection: Duncan, for his courtesy and enthusiam in the dojo.

Steve's selection: Kim, for showing great spirit in the tournament (First time ever in Bogu!).

To show Raymond Sensei the HKC's unending appreciation for all he has done to help our club, he was awarded a Hand-Made, Dobari Shinai as a token of our thanks.

On behalf of the HKC, thanks for everything Raymond Sensei!!

Here is a the final match between Steve Quinlan and Chris Banks for first.
